ขั้นปกติคือ การใช้คำคุณศัพท์บรรยายสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งโดยไม่เปรียบเทียบกับใครที่ไหน เช่นA cat is big. แมวตัวหนึ่ง ใหญ่A man is tall. ชายคนหนึ่ง ตัวสูงThis car is expensive. รถยนต์คันนี้ ราคาแพงThe water in this pot is hot. น้ำในหม้อใบนี้ ร้อน
คุณศัพท์ขั้นกว่า (Comparative) คืออะไร
ขั้นกว่าคือ การเปรียบเทียบสิ่งสองสิ่ง ว่าสิ่งไหน สูง ต่ำ สั้น ยาว เล็ก ใหญ่…..กว่ากัน เช่นA cat is bigger than a mouse. แมว ใหญ่กว่า หนูA man is taller than a woman. ผู้ชาย สูงกว่า ผู้หญิงThis car is more expensive than that car. รถยนต์คันนี้ แพงกว่า คันนั้นThe water in this pot is hotter than water in that pot. น้ำในหม้อใบนี้ ร้อนกว่า น้ำในหม้อใบนั้นสังเกตได้ว่า คำว่า กว่า ในภาษาอังกฤษคือการเติม -er than หรือบางที ใช้ more – than เอ๊ะยังไงกัน เดี๋ยวอธิบายให้ฟังด้านล่างนะครับ

ขั้นที่สุด หรือสูงสุด คือ การเปรียบเทียบตั้งแต่สามขึ้นไป แล้วปรากฏว่า มีสิ่งหนึ่งที่ สูง ต่ำ สั้น ยาว เล็ก ใหญ่….กว่าเพื่อนเลย เช่นA cat is the biggest animal in this room. แมวเป็นสัตว์ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในห้องนี้ (ออกจากห้องนี้แล้วคงไม่ใช่)Somchai is the tallest man in class. สมชายตัวสูงที่สุดให้ห้อง (เฉพาะห้องนี้นะครับ)This is the most expensive car in Thailand. นี่คือรถยนต์ ที่แพงที่สุดในไทยสังเกตได้ว่า คำว่า ที่สุด เป็นการเติม -est หรือ the most – ทำไมเป็นเช่นนั้น มาดูกฎเกณฑ์ด้านล่างเลยครับ
การทำคำคุณศัพท์ให้เป็นขั้นกว่า และขั้นที่สุด
ให้จำง่ายๆข้อแรกก่อนเลยคือ เติม -er ในขั้นกว่า และ the – est สำหรับขั้นที่สุด เช่น

ง่ายจัง เติมเอาอย่างนี้ทุกตัวหรือเปล่า ….ไม่ได้ต้องมีกฎกติกานิดหนึง
กฎการเติม -er และ -est
- คำที่มีสระเสียงสั้นตัวเดียว และตัวสะกดตัวเดียว ถ้าคุณสมบัติครบสองข้อนี้ ให้เติมตัวสะกดอีกตัวเข้าไป แล้วเติม -er -est เช่น

- คำสองพยางค์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย -ed, -ful, -ing, -less ให้เติม more และ the most ข้างหน้า เช่น
